The HT-S40R is designed for buyers who want a proper 5.1-channel surround sound system without building a traditional AV receiver setup. Its three-channel soundbar works together with a wired subwoofer and rear speakers to distribute audio around the room. Total system output is rated at 600W, while Dolby Digital support provides multichannel surround audio from compatible sources.

For TV connections, the system provides HDMI ARC, optical audio and analogue stereo input options. HDMI ARC is useful with compatible televisions because audio can be sent through one HDMI connection. Certain compatible Sony BRAVIA TVs also support a wireless TV audio connection.

The rear section uses a wireless amplifier, reducing the need to run an audio cable between the front and rear of the room. The rear speakers connect through this amplifier, so “wireless rear speakers” should not be interpreted as completely cable-free individual speakers.

Music can be streamed over Bluetooth 5.0, while the USB Type-A port supports WAV, MP3 and WMA playback. Cinema, Music, Auto Sound, Voice and Night settings give you practical control over different listening situations.
